The company was selected to fabricate MOX fuel for the 500MWe Borssele nuclear reactor by its operator, EPZ, in 2008.
EPZ secured a governmental license this year that authorized the loading of eight MOX assemblies in Borssele reactor in 2014, followed by 12 assemblies each year.
The use of MOX fuel is expected to enable EPZ to fully utilize the economic and environmental advantages associated with used fuel recycling.
EPZ has been recycling used fuel from Borssele to Areva’s La Hague reprocessing facility in northern France, for the last 30 years.
The La Hague facility has to date processed close to 375 metric tons of used fuel.
The Netherlands becomes the seventh country in list, which also includes Germany, Switzerland, France, and Japan, to use or have used MOX fuel in its nuclear reactors.
