Under this contract, Areva will deliver a conversion substation that will supply the smelter with direct current for the aluminum production process.
Areva is also proposing to contribute to the South African nuclear program foreseen by power generator Eskom and the country’s government that is considering to build up to 20,000MW of electricity capacity.
Areva has offered to build a fleet of European pressurized reactors (EPR), which is a third generation reactor, and has also offered to support and co-invest in the development of the nuclear sector in South Africa.
The French group said that it is ready to partner extensively with various entities in South Africa to build the EPR fleet and develop different aspects of the nuclear industry, from manufacturing and uranium beneficiation. Areva has also entered into several agreements related to skills development, as a commitment to South Africa’s nuclear education development.
