The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) final rule regarding approved spent fuel storage casks (Amendment 3 to the Certificate of Compliance 1029) went into effect on Feb. 23, 2015, paving the way for AREVA TN’s NUHOMS® 32PTH2 system introduction to the U.S. market. This system features a newly developed transportable canister designed to safely accommodate up to 32 intact – or 16 damaged – pressurized water used fuel assemblies, including high burnup fuel assemblies. Once loaded with used fuel, this canister can be stored in the company’s Standardized NUHOMS® Advanced Horizontal Storage Module, which features the industry’s highest level of seismic resistance.
AREVA TN also recently introduced the MP197HB transport cask to the U.S. market. This is the first and only transport cask that is licensed in the country to transport high burnup used fuel for offsite storage.
