The power project, which will use landfill gas as fuel, is owned by the Salinas Valley Solid Waste Authority (SVSWA). The company stated that the project will improve the surrounding environment as well as provide cost-effective clean energy to the City of Palo Alto.
Ameresco has designed, permitted, constructed and now operates the facility at the Johnson Canyon Landfill in Gonzales. Ameresco Johnson Canyon has signed a gas agreement with SVSWA to purchase the landfill gas, which will be used in the plant.
The electricity generated from the facility will be sold to the City of Palo Alto under a 20-year power purchase agreement. A portion of the revenues from the sale of that power will be returned to the SVSWA for the duration of the contract.
Ameresco renewable energy senior vice president Michael Bakas said that the company has collaborated with the Salinas Valley Solid Waste Authority and the City of Palo Alto to offer green power.
"We have had a successful track record working with many counties and municipalities in California and across the nation to provide alternative energy resources, and we are excited that our project will help SVSWA and Palo Alto and its constituents to achieve their sustainability goals in a cost effective manner," added Bakas.
