The FutureGen Industrial Alliance would take over as lead developer of the $1.3bn project, Bloomberg reported.

The board of directors of the FutureGen 2.0 project is in talks for the transfer of a $730m grant given to Ameren in 2010 by the US Department of Energy.

According to Bloomberg, the reassignment will keep alive an initiative dating back to 2003 to capture and store CO2 emissions from a coal-fired power plant.

The FutureGen Industrial Alliance includes seven coal mining companies and two utility subsidiaries of PPL Corp.
