Under the terms of the $3m contract, the company will perform site cut and fill, drill 477 pier foundations, transformer and switchgear foundations, and will also be responsible for underground conduits and power runs and fencing, Electric Light & Power/ POWERGRID International reports.

The substation form part of ATXI’s Illinois Rivers Project, a new 380m, 345,000V transmission line that will interconnect Missouri, Illinois and Indiana, and aims to enhance the reliability and efficiency of the electric power grid.

The estimated $1.1bn project is claimed to be Ameren’s largest-ever transmission project and the longest single transmission line project in Illinois history.

The transmission line route through Illinois was finalized by the Illinois Commerce Commission in February 2014.
