Polish utility PGE EJ1 has selected UK engineering company AMEC to support building two nuclear power plants.

AMEC said on 14 July that the 10-year technical services contract, to be confirmed in ‘the next few weeks’, is worth GBP 39 million for the initial required scope of work, with further options up to GBP 255 million.

AMEC said that it would provide specific services such as licensing and permitting support, supply chain and contract management and health and safety management.

Clive White, president of AMEC’s Clean Energy Europe, said: "A big part of our approach is helping our client develop a strong nuclear capability by transferring skills and knowledge from our people to theirs through the life of the contract."

Two locations, Choczewo and Zarnowiec, both close to the Baltic coast, have been shortlisted. The Polish government wants the first plant, capable of producing approximately 3,000 megawatts of electricity, to be operational by 2024.

All major contracts — including EPC and reactor vendor — are expected to be signed by 2016, according to a Polish government planning document published in January 2014.

The contract was won in a public tender including methodological (70%), pricing (20%) and commercial (10%) elements. Other bidding consortia were Mott MacDonald & AF-Consult, URS Polksa & Tractebel Engineering and Exelon Generation.

A PGE statement said:
"The technical advisor selected will in particular support the owner in the execution of tasks and meeting the requirements set by the nuclear technology provider/ main EPC contractor as well as other key service providers of the project.

The scope of work encompasses 13 areas of close cooperation:

  • Integrated proceedings support
  • Licensing
  • Engineering support
  • Site infrastructure
  • Contractor and supply chain oversight
  • Culture of safety
  • QA
  • Management system
  • Contract management
  • PMO
  • Capacity building and operational readiness
  • Training oversight
  • Start-up and testing.
