International engineering and project management company AMEC has won a three-year contract to carry out a major environmental impact assessment for a new 1000 MW nuclear power station at the Bohunice site in Slovakia.
The three-year contract, awarded by the Nuclear Energy Company of Slovakia (JESS), which is 51% owned by Slovak nuclear and decommissioning company Javys and 49% owned by Czech utility CEZ. Russia’s Rosatom is currently in negotiations to take a stake in the project, as CEZ is seeking to reduce its share in the joint venture.
"This is an exciting contract for an important new client in Slovakia," said Clive White, President of AMEC’s Clean Energy Europe business. "The contract is for the provision of a full environmental impact assessment, which is vital in ensuring the approval of neighbouring states and other key stakeholders for the development of the Jaslovske Bohunice station.
Slovakia has four operating nuclear power reactors at the Bohunice and Mochovce sites and is building two units at Mochovce. Two older Bohunice reactors (V1) were closed in 2006 and 2008, as a condition of Slovakia’s accession to the EU.
