A multi-million pound contract announced today will see Amec Foster Wheeler carry out environmental impact assessments on the site of NuGeneration’s proposed Mooside nuclear power plant in West Cumbria.
Amec Foster Wheeler will also provide ‘specialised environmental consultancy support’ to prepare for the installation of the three Westinghouse reactors at the site. The development is set to be the largest new nuclear plant in Europe.
The contract begins immediately, Amec FW said.
"This is a key contract and further highlights Amec Foster Wheeler’s important role in the development of the UK’s nuclear new build programme," commented Rob Brown, managing director of Amec Foster Wheeler’s Environment and Infrastructure business in Europe.
The contract offers the potential for Amec FW to develop a "long-term partnership with NuGen and to work with them throughout this truly exciting development," Brown added.
NuGen is planning to build 3.4 GW of capacity at the Moorside site close to the Sellafield complex. Once all three reactors are operational in 2026 the plant will provide around seven per cent of the UK’s electricity requirements, Amec FW said.
Earlier this week NuGen signed an agreement with the UK Treasury to promote financing for the project under the UK Guarantee Scheme.
