The approval has been secured from the Natural Resources and Mines ministry for three of five leases following an environmental approval and completion of the definitive feasibility study.

Altona, having secured the permits, is now expected to move towards the development of the mining sites and submit a Plan of Operations.

Commenting on the approval Altona managing director Dr Alistair Cowden said the mining leases were approved within the timeframe expected by the company and represents a major milestone for it.

"The strategic value of the Roseby project has been enhanced by the completion of permitting," added Cowden.

The Roseby project is expected to produce about 39,000t per annum of copper and 17,000 ounces per annum of gold for 10 years from a large scale open pit-mining operation.
