Alstom’s first 800kV high voltage direct current (HVDC) converter transformer has successfully completed factory acceptance tests in Shandong, China.

HDVC transformer

Developed as part of a joint project between Alstom Grid and State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC) subsidiary, Shandong Power Equipment (SPECO), the transformer is designed to enable SGCC to power part of the Jinping to Sunan 2,090km long ultra high voltage direct current (UHVDC) power link.

The link will transport clean hydropower from generating stations in central western China across to the industrialised coastal area in eastern China.

Alstom Grid Power Transformers Product line vice president Lars Martinsson said, "This reinforces our leadership in the transformer market, and paves the way for tomorrow’s electrical grid, which will be flexible, efficient, and sustainable – an integral part of a smart infrastructure."

Astlom Grid designed the transformer and also supervised the production at SPECO.
