Hubei Energy has awarded a contract to Alstom to supply generator step-up transformer for the phase III expansion of the 2,100MW Ezhou power plant in China.

The three-phase generator transformers will be the first-of-its-kind to be manufactured by a European company in China, and the highest capacity transformers in the region.

Located in Gedian Economic Development Zone, the phase III expansion plant is expected to be the largest thermal power generating unit in Hubei province.

The facility will primarily serve the electricity needs in city of Wuhan.

Alstom Grid China and East Asia Pacific Region senior vice-president Michel Serra said: "We are honored to start the first cooperation with Hubei Energy Group in transformer business, providing Alstom’s advanced technology expertise, strong R&D capability and excellent local manufacturing capacity.

"We are looking forward to continue supporting and contributing to the energy development of Hubei province."

The company plans to manufacture the transformers at its facility in Wuhan.
