AES Corp has awarded Alstom a contract to build a turnkey 670 MW supercritical coal-fired power plant near the town of Galabovo in south-eastern Bulgaria.

Alstom will be the EPC contractor for the Maritza East 1 lignite-fired station and will supply lignite-firing pulverised coal boilers using low NOx burners along with two 335 MW turbine-generator sets and TOPGAS turbogenerators, as well as coal and ash handling systems, electrical, information and control systems and balance of plant. Alstom is also to supply a limestone-based wet flue gas desulphurisation equipment as part of the more than €700 million contract

Maritza East 1 will be the first large-scale power project to be built in Bulgaria for the last twenty years and is planned to start commercial operation in 2009. The plant will achieve emissions levels below those required by the EU Large Combustion Plant Directive.
