The project follows a scheme delivered by Alstom in 1997 and will help the South Korean government deliver on plans for a low-carbon economy.
Jeju, which is situated 100km south of the peninsular mainland, previously operated on an independent electric network, suffering frequent blackouts and unstable power supply.
Alstom Grid senior vice president for power electronics and automation Patrick Plas said the company supplied the first HVDC link at 300MW between Jeju and the mainland in 1997.
"This second project demonstrates Alstom’s commitment to continuous innovation in the high voltage energy management," Plas added.
Alstom said its HVDC technology is aligned with Korea’s plans for a low-carbon economy, and has the capability to carry out large amounts of electricity throughout long distances, with minimal losses.
The new HVDC link is designed to be bi-directional, where electricity flow goes in both directions between the mainland and Jeju Island.
