The upgrades are expected to help lower operating costs and enhance the efficiency and reliability of the generating station.
Involving replacement of 12 pulverizers and upgrade of two steam turbines, the project is designed to increase the plant’s operating capacity by nearly 10%, bringing more low-cost electricity to utility customers.
Alliant Energy’s Wisconsin utility president John Larsen said, "This project will provide direct benefits to customers and is part of our overall energy resources strategy that puts a priority on investing in our newer and larger generating units."
Work is expected to commence in 2015, and complete in 2017.
The upgrade cost of $130m will be shared by Alliant Energy’s Wisconsin utility and the co-owners, including Madison Gas and Electric Company, and Wisconsin Public Service Corporation.
