The US firm installed a 30 MW, four-hour duration energy storage facility at a substation in Escondido, California. The project is part of a wider effort by Californian utility SDG&E to enhance regional grid reliability, and included installation of a second, 7.5 MW storage facility.
SDG&E has fast-tracked the installation of energy storage capacity on its grid to allow greater integration of renewable energy as well as improve reliability. More than one-third of its energy is sourced from wind and solar, according to AES.
“California has created the launchpad for energy storage adoption on a global scale,” said John Zahurancik, President, AES Energy Storage. “By prioritizing storage to address real system needs today, SDG&E is leading the way, creating a sustainable model that others can follow to achieve a clean, unbreakable grid.”
AES has now installed more than 200 MW of Advancion battery storage capacity around the world. The Escondido facility is 50 per cent larger than the world’s next largest Li-ion battery energy storage installation, it said.
