American Electric Power (AEP) noted that integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) technology converts coal into a synthetic gas that moves through pollutant-removal equipment before the gas is burned in a combined-cycle gas turbine to produce electricity.

The process reportedly allows for more efficient and effective reduction and removal of sulfur dioxides, particulates and mercury from plant emissions than conventional pulverized coal technology. IGCC plants also offer the opportunity for carbon capture for permanent storage in deep geologic formations.

AEP has earlier received approval from the West Virginia Public Service Commission to build a 629MW IGCC plant in West Virginia. The company proposed to build a similar 629MW IGCC unit in Meigs County, Ohio.

Robert Powers, president of AEP Utilities, said: It’s disappointing that the Ohio Supreme Court decision did not provide the clarity we need to move forward with construction of an IGCC plant in Ohio.
