According to the newspaper, the new reactors would be built as part of the Ontario government’s plan to spend CAD26 billion ($22 billion) to expand and refurbish its fleet of nuclear power plants.
AECL is competing against Areva Group and Westinghouse Electric Co, for the contract to construct Ontario’s first reactors since the 1980s. A site, just east of Toronto, has already been picked.
‘AECL has basically been chosen,’ a source in the Globe article said. ‘The province wants to negotiate with AECL and the feds on an exclusive basis. But they have not notified the federal government of that yet.’
