A consortium led by Acciona Infrastructure Canada has secured the CAD$1.75bn ($1.2bn) main civil works construction contract from BC Hydro for the 1.1GW Site C dam and hydroelectric power generation project on the Peace River in north-eastern British Columbia.
The Peace River Hydro Partners consortium also includes Samsung C&T Canada and Petrowest.
Under the contract, the consortium will build an earth fill dam, two diversion tunnels and a roller-compacted-concrete foundation for the generating station and spillways.
The contract is expected to create more than 8,000 jobs over the eight-year period.
Acciona Infrastructure Canada president Darren Sokoloski said: "Acciona is proud that our joint venture was selected by BC Hydro to build one of the largest infrastructure projects in Canada."
BC Hydro will own and operate the project upon its planned completion by 2020.
Estimated to cost around C$8.3bn ($6.23bn), the project will have an annual generating capacity of 5,100GWh of clean and renewable electricity.
The clean electricity generated at the project will be enough to power more than 450,000 annually for 100 years.
Petrowest president and CEO Rick Quigley previously said: "Peace River Hydro Partners are excited to be part of building a legacy project that will benefit British Columbians for generations to come."
The Site C project will be the third dam on the Peace River besides W.A.C Bennett and the Peace Canyon dams.
