ABB has won another contract on the Three Gorges project. The company will supply 500kV gas-insulted switchgear for an electrical substation at the dam site.

Around 25% of the equipment for the substation will be produced in China, in co-operation with Shenyang High Voltage Switchgear and Xian High Voltage Switchgear.

The order is ABB’s third for the Three Gorges. In August 1997, the company won a US$250M contract to deliver eight 700MW hydro generators to the project. In April 1999, ABB won an order worth more than US$340M to supply two converter stations for a 3000MW HVDC link between Three Gorges and the coastal province of Jiangsu and Shanghai.

‘We have positioned ourselves for growth in the important Chinese market with our strong local presence — over 5000 people and more than 20 joint ventures,’ said ABB president and CEO, Göran Lindhal. ‘We intend to continue to support the economic development of China by delivering the best technology available and by developing our local business even further.’
