The circuit breaker is installed at the 1,200kV national test station built by Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL) at Bina in Madhya Pradesh.
The hybrid switchgear solution features the circuit breaker, a gas-insulated disconnector, current transformers and monitoring as well as diagnostic equipment.
According to ABB, the circuit breaker could cope with electricity produced by ten large power plants or the combined average annual electrical load of Switzerland and Denmark within milliseconds.
The circuit-breaker, which uses half of the space of conventional air-insulated designs, can protect critical parts from environmental exposure and provide resilience to earthquakes.
ABB Power Products division head Bernhard Jucker said: "ABB has a long track record in India and we are pleased to continue to support the country in the development of an efficient and reliable power grid.
"Ultra high-voltage technologies are especially suitable for large countries such as India where power often has to be transmitted over large distances from generation to load centers in the most efficient way."
India is adding significant power generation capacity to meet increasing demand, which needs a reliable transmission and distribution infrastructure in order to supply the electricity to consumers.
