ABB has won an order from Italy-based transmission system operator, Terna, to supply a synchronous compensator solution for the Codrongianos power station in northern Sardinia.

Synchronous compensators are designed to swiftly adjust power conditions in the transmission grid either by generating or absorbing reactive power, regulating voltage and improving reliability and quality of power supply.

Under the $20m turnkey project, ABB will provide design, supply, commission and maintenance services for the power station.

The company will execute the order along with Ansaldo Energia.

ABB Power Systems division head Brice Koch said, "This synchronous compensator solution is designed to enhance reliability, efficiency and functional safety of the electrical system."

The company will supply products for the project to improve power quality at the station.

Major product supplies for the power station include transformers, a range of low- and medium-voltage switchgear, disconnectors, start-up and excitation systems, cables and other auxillary equipment.

The company will also supply control and protection systems, as well as monitoring and diagnostic solutions for the plant.

The project is planned for commissioning in 2014.

Codrongianos power plant will include two systems each comprising a 250 megavolt ampere (MVA) synchronous compensator, excitation system, startup and cooling systems.

It will also have a 330MVA step-up transformer for connection to the 380kV grid, medium-voltage switchgear, and the auxiliary, protection, management, control and monitoring systems.
