Switzerland-based automation firm ABB has been awarded with a contract from Bechtel Infrastructure and Power to deliver a turnkey substation solution for a 1.1GW combined-cycle power plant in New York State.
In this connection, a 345kV gas insulated switchgear (GIS) substation will be constructed for the new combined cycle natural gas-fueled power plant in Dover developed by the Cricket Valley Energy Center.
Upon completion of the project in 2020, the electricity generated by it will be integrated by the substation into the New York transmission grid.
ABB Grid Integration business managing director Patrick Fragman said: “This advanced GIS substation will boost transmission capacity, improve efficiency and enhance power reliability for millions of New Yorker consumers.

According to ABB, its GIS technology will boost operational reliability along with efficiency and safety. Besides, it would help in bringing down the maintenance requirements and substation footprint.
Bechtel holds the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPAC) contract of the new Dover power plant from Cricket Valley.
Previously, ABB had delivered a similar substation for Bechtel which is building the 1.12GW Hummel Energy Center owned by Panda Power Funds. The 345kV GIS substation for the coal-to-natural gas power plant in Snyder County, Pennsylvania will be energized during the course of the year.
Japanese energy firm Jera is the largest stakeholder in Cricket Valley with 44%. Other stakeholders in the Dover include TIAA Investments, Advanced Power, BlackRock Financial Management, NongHyup Financial Group and Development Bank of Japan.
