The contract has been awarded by Tanap, a joint venture formed between SOCAR of Azerbaijan, BOTAS of Turkey with and BP.
Under the contract, ABB will be responsible for the supply of integrated software solutions for telecoms and control systems to help monitor, secure and control 1,850 km gas pipeline throughout its operational life.
ABB will be responsible for supplying the control system, telecommunications, pipeline monitoring, security systems which include fiber-optic cables to transmit data along the pipelines.
The firm will also supply its 800xA process automation system to control and automate the pipeline, construction of which started in March 2015.
ABB said that the software solutions will integrate the supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems with the telecommunications that control the gas flows, detect leakages or intrusions and make closed circuit television (CCTV) coverage available in order to ensure safety and security.
ABB Process Automation Division president Peter Terwiesch said: "ABB’s leading System 800xA software and integrated telecoms solution will allow TANAP to safely and reliably operate the pipeline across vast distances from multiple locations."
Trans Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline Project (TANAP) involves the construction of a 1,850km-long pipeline to bring Azerbaijan’s natural gas directly to Europe.
Said to be one of the world’s longest gas pipelines upon completion, the 1,850km pipeline is designed to supply gas from Azerbaijan’s Shah Deniz-2 gas field and other areas of the Caspian Sea, to Turkey and Europe.
Azerbaijan is estimated to hold gas reserves of more than three trillion cubic meters.
