Swiss power and automation technology company ABB has secured $18m worth contracts to supply electrification and automation systems for solar power plants in India.
Located in the southern Indian states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, the projects will feed over 850MW of solar energy into the grid.
Under the contracts, ABB will design, supply, install and commission electrification and automation systems for Adani’s 648MW solar plant in Kamuthi, Tamil Nadu.
The company will provide two 230KV and three 110KV substations to connect the electricity generated to the local grid.
ABB power systems division president Claudio Facchin said: "ABB has supported India’s power infrastructure development through the decades and we are pleased to facilitate the country’s push for solar energy, where we have already made a significant contribution.
"This project exemplifies our power and automation system integration capabilities and reinforces our commitment to renewable energy, a key component ABB’s Next Level strategy"
ABB said that Symphony Plus control technology will serve as the ‘unified automation platform’ for the plant including the electrical systems, the solar inverters and software for plant performance monitoring, maximizing operational efficiency and ensuring grid compliance.
The IEC 61850 based automation system will enable local and remote monitoring and control of the plant and substation assets.
India intends to increase its solar generation capacity by 10GW by 2017.
Earlier in July this year, ABB secured a $28m contract from PowerGrid Corporation of India to extend three substations in the country.
