NPC Ukrenergo will replace air blast-type circuit breakers, that have been in operation for nearly four decades, with ABB’s live tank circuit breakers.

The replacement of circuit breakers will be carried out in three phases, starting in this year and to be completed in 2014.

As part of the contract, ABB will also provide control cabinets with bay control devices for the circuit breakers, along with an online condition monitoring system.

ABB said the shift from air blast technology also eliminates the need for air compression facilities.

ABB high-voltage products business head Giandomenico Rivetti said the new equipment will help in the modernization of the Ukrainian power transmission network and improve grid reliability and efficiency.

Earlier this year, ABB signed a contract with Ukrenergo to provide 44 sets of 750kV SF6 circuit breakers.

ABB is a power and automation technology group.
