India’s state-owned utility Tamil Nadu Transmission (TANTRANSCO) has awarded a contract to ABB to build a new substation in Chennai.

Under the $10m contract, ABB will design, supply, install and commission the indoor gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) substation to enhance electricity supply in central Chennai and strengthen power grid.

The company will supply nine bays of 230kV GIS, power transformers and 23 indoor switchgear units rated at 33kV.

The substations will also feature IEC 61850-based open protection, automation and telecommunication systems as well as ancilliary systems.

ABB Power Systems division head Claudio Facchin said: "This substation will help to reinforce the grid and enhance power supplies to meet the increasing demand for electricity from residential and commercial consumers as a result of growing urbanization.

"ABB’s compact GIS technology will reduce the substation’s footprint significantly, with due consideration to safety and aesthetics, while ensuring efficiency and reliability."

Scheduled to be completed in 2015, the compact substation solution will be deployed in the congested Raja Annamalai Puram area, in the city center.
