Swiss-Swedish engineering group ABB is installing protection and control systems to modernise the 10GW Guri power plant in Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela.

The upgrades will strengthen the national power grid, as part of a US$26M contract from ELELCA (Electrificacion del Caroni).

ABB’s systems will be installed in several phases, beginning in 2007, and along with the retrofit, the company will provide installation and training.

Detailed commercial terms have not been disclosed.

The Guri dam is 1300m long and 162m high; it supplies 60% of Venezuela’s electricity demand.
