ABB to supply its central inverter solutions for two solar plants Mafraq I and Mafraq II in Jordan, which will cumulatively produce 102MW of clean energy.

These two solar plants will be constructed by Fotowatio Renewable Ventures (FRV). ABB has signed contracts with FRV, a leading global utility-scale solar developer, for the supply of central inverter solutions to PV power plants Mafraq I and Mafraq II. The plants will be located in Mafraq, Jordan, which is one of the areas of the highest solar irradiation in the region. These construction projects were awarded in the second round of Jordanian solar program. The two plants, totaling 102 MW AC nominal rating, are expected to be operational summer 2018.

According to the newly signed contracts, the plants will be powered by ABB’s central inverter solutions consisting of 62 pcs of 2 MVA outdoor type central inverters, 30 pcs of 4 MVA and 2 pcs of 2 MVA medium-voltage step-up stations. The stations are using ABB’s outdoor type oil transformers and ABB’s 36 kV SafeRing-type Ring Main Units delivered with outdoor enclosure. The grid code compatibility is secured by ABB’s plant controller together with the inverters’ advanced grid support features. Commissioning is also included in the delivery.

ABB has been present in the Middle East since 1920s. One of the corner stones of ABB success in the region is the experienced and wide service organization that can support projects like this for years to come. This delivery is a milestone for ABB in both the Jordan PV market and whole territory.

“We believe strongly in the potential of solar energy in this territory and are committed to further developing our capabilities to support our customers during the whole lifetime of their projects,” says Anshuman T, head of ABB sales for solar inverters in the region.

“For FRV these two projects reflect the company’s strong commitment to promoting the generation of clean and affordable energy in Jordan and enabling the country’s sustainable development. ABB was selected as inverter supplier for these projects because of the high product performance and good local presence, which can support the solutions delivered over the lifetime of the project,” says Carlo Frigerio, Managing Director of FRV in the Middle East.
