Swiss automation firm ABB has signed contracts to support power reliability in Vietnam.

The deals with the Vietnamese power firm Central Power Corporation (CPC) will see ABB deliver SCADA/DMS (Supervisory, Control and Data Acquisition/Distribution Management System) software to Pleiku and Tam Ky in Central Vietnam.

The solutions will help in improving power supplies for aabout 250,000 inhabitants in both the cities.

In 2012, the Vietnamese government gave out a 10 year roadmap under which power network and power reliability were needed to be optimised. It was one of the four key components under the programme.

As the Vietnamese economy is poised to be the second most dynamic Asian growth economy during 2016, following India, energy consumption is also expected grow in terms of about 10% to 12% per year.

The systems supplied by ABB will enable real-time monitoring and control of the grid condition and can gather data to offer quick detection of possible outages and can allow for immediate decisions to be taken to improve overall grid reliability.

ABB has already taken up and completed similar projects in cities of Da Nang, Hue, Qui Nhon and Buon Ma Thuot. These cities have improved their power reliability for more than three million Vietnamese residents.

The SCADA system supplied by ABB has been designed to be completely functional in real-time monitoring and control of primary and secondary equipment in transmission and distribution substations.

The software allows for right actions to be taken at the right time and therefore achieving maximised availability of the power system.
