Switzerland-based power and automation technology group ABB has secured a $40m order from Danish transmission system operator Energinet.dk for the construction of a alternating-current (AC) power cable system.

The scope of the contract includes the technical design, engineering and production of the high-voltage cable system, as well as accessories and installation.

The 32km long 220KV three-core polymeric insulated submarine cable featuring fiber-optics for datacommunications and temperature monitoring of the power cable will enable the transmission of power from the Horns Rev 3 offshore wind farm, which will have an installed capacity of around 400MW.

Located in the North Sea, the Horns Rev 3 wind farm will generate clean electricity enough to power approximately 400,000 local households, when complete.

The cable will be manufactured at ABB’s high-voltage cable factory in Karlskrona, Sweden.

ABB Power Systems division head Claudio Facchin said, "We are pleased to support this initiative and promote the further deployment of renewable energy in Denmark."
