Under the contract, the company will design, supply, install and commission the extension of the existing 380/115kV gas-insulated switchgear substation.

ABB will supply key products including high-voltage gas-insulated switchgear, circuit breakers, and the control, protection and telecommunication equipment for the project, which is expected to be completed by 2012.

The substation’s extension will enable the integration of additional capacity from two new generation blocks of the Yanbu steam power plant, owned and operated by power and water utility Marafiq.

The new blocks will have an additional generating capacity of 500MW, raising the Yanbu plant’s total capacity to around 1,500MW.
