The companies have signed a memorandum of understanding to establish a global commercial alliance for developing and marketing modular and scalable microgrid solutions, using lithium-ion batteries for energy storage.
ABB will deliver technologies for electrification, control optimization, stabilization and expert consulting services while Samsung SDI will provide the batteries and the battery management system.
The South Korea firm will gain better access to microgrid systems and markets with the help of ABB’s worldwide market presence and knowledge in microgrid.
Samsung SDI’s expertise in battery and materials will allow ABB to extend business horizon to energy storage systems.
ABB CEO Ulrich Spiesshofer said: "This strategic alliance allows us to combine our complementary capabilities and will enable us to bring optimized solutions to our customers."
Samsung SDI president and CEO Namseong Cho said: "Together with ABB we will make our utmost effort to develop new products and to pioneer new markets to keep on being the world’s best ESS company."
Navigant Research expects the energy storage market for lithium ion batteries in microgrids to reach 3.42GWh by 2022, at a CAGR of 41%.
