Under the partnership, ABB will focus on supplying HVDC technology while Aibel will take turnkey responsibility for the offshore platforms.
It will combine the core competencies of both the firms.
The agreement is part of ABB’s ongoing Power Grids transformation, which intends to address identified shortcomings specially in its offshore business.
ABB said that its HVDC system uses technology that ensures the optimum integration of intermittent renewables and control of power flows.
ABB CEO Ulrich Spiesshofer said: “We are proud to partner with Aibel to tap the vast opportunities of the ongoing Energy Revolution and related offshore wind infrastructure investments.
“Together, we intend to grow our businesses by complementing each other’s strengths in unique customer services for offshore wind projects."
ABB further developed the HVDC technology in the 1990s and introduced a voltage sourced converter (VSC) solution.
The company an installed capacity of over 120,000MW, around half the global installed base. It includes 18 of the 24 VSC HVDC projects commissioned across the world.
