An Automobile Association (AA) of Ireland spokesman said that although fuel prices have increased across Europe, there is concern at the disproportionate rise in diesel prices.
The AA noted that since March 2008, petrol prices have increased by only 0.5 cents when compared to diesel, which increased by three cents.
The AA spokesman also noted that an increased number of motorists, who prefer diesel over petrol due to the tax incentives on diesel, are uneasy about the price increase. The price increase is reportedly also a cause of concern for truckers.
The news source reported an industry analyst as saying that the surge in diesel prices is a result of speculation in the worldwide markets along with increased sales of diesel-fueled vehicles. The analyst added that the speculation impact could subside over a few months time.
