World Bank Group’s member IFC will provide advisory services equivalent to $300,000 to the program, which is part of the IFC-Canada Climate Change Program.
The participating hotels will strive to 57,000MWh of energy per year, which is enough to power up 75,000 homes in the country.
Commenting on the participation IFC country head in Brazil Loy Pires remarked that their ultimate goal is not only to improve energy use in the hotel industry, but also to use the experience to expand to other sectors in the country, such as hospitals and retail.
Pro-Hotels Program director Rodrigo Aguiar added, "There is a huge potential for energy savings of 30% to 80% with the implementation of appropriate systems to manage water and energy consumption.
"Such improvements can increase the net income of a hotel by up to 25 percent and contribute to climate-change mitigation by decreasing emissions of greenhouse gases."
