Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems (MHPS) has secured an order to supply M701S(DA)X gas turbine, steam turbine, and power generator for Chinese steelmaker Maanshan Iron & Steel.

MHPS stated that the equipment will be the key component of a blast furnace gas (BFG)-fired gas turbine combined cycle (GTCC) power plant with a 180MW capacity. Operations at the facility are scheduled to begin at the end of next year.

The power generating equipment uses by-product gases emitted by the blast, coke, and converter furnaces and can enhance GTCC facilities already in operation. Once the equipment is operational, the steelmaker plans to use a portion of the electricity generated to power the plant itself.

The BFG-fired GTCC facility will include the M701S(DA)X gas turbine, a heat recovery boiler, steam turbine, generator, gas compressor and auxiliary equipment.

The deliveries to be made by MHPS include gas turbine, steam turbine, generator, and gas compressor, as well as auxiliary equipment including electrostatic precipitators and speed reduction units. Mitsubishi Electric will supply a generator for the project.

Maanshan Iron & Steel is a Chinese steelmaker and has been a long-term customer of MHPS. In 2007, MHPS supplied a M701S(DA) GTCC power plant 1 series for the factory, the first M701S(DA) system in China.

MHPS said: “BFG has a lower calorific value than natural gas, and so requires advanced technology to achieve stable combustion.

“MHPS has developed proprietary technologies in BFG-fired GTCC power generation, including development of a dedicated combustion system in the 1980s. These technologies have been supplied to steel plants in Japan and around the world, with MHPS today holding a leading global share of more than 60% of the market.

Recently, MHPS began trial operation of gas turbine combined cycle (GTCC) of 880MW Jawa-2 Project underway by PT. PLN (Persero), Indonesia’s state-owned electricity provider, at the Tanjung Priok Power Plant on Java Island.

The project, which includes construction of GTCC natural-gas-fired power generation facilities, is now in the final stage, with commercial operations expected to begin by this May.
