The bioproduct mill will increase Finland’s share of renewable energy by more than two percentage points

Metsä Fibre has selected Doosan Škoda Power for the supply of a turbine generator with an electric power of 270MW for a bioproduct mill in Kemi, Finland.
The turbine will have a condensing turbine section and will be equipped with two steam bleed connections of different pressure levels.
The turbine generator, which will be installed in connection with the recovery boiler, will generate electricity fully from renewable fuels.
The bioproduct mil will operate without using any fossil fuels and the surplus bioelectricity produced will be supplied to the national grid.
It is expected to increase Finland’s share of renewable energy by more than two percentage points.
Doosan Škoda Power area sales manager Václav Lang said: “The planned bioproduct mill in Kemi is certainly an important and ambitious project that Doosan Škoda Power is proud to participate on.
“The installation uses a 270 MW turbine, which makes it one of the world’s biggest turbines used in pulp production and I am happy that our turbine was chosen for this task.”
Metsä Fibre said that the work on the Kemi bioproduct mill project is progressing according to plan.
The company expects that preconditions required to make the decision on the €1.5bn investment to be in place early 2021 at the earliest.
During the construction phase, the project is estimated to employ a total number of around 15,000 people.
Metsä Fibre bioproduct mill project director Jari-Pekka Johansson said: “We have established high material, energy and environmental targets for the Kemi bioproduct mill.
