The company noted that the development of the mine, situated in Canada’s Northwest Territories, is progressing as per the plan and budget, with the overall project about 62% finished at the end of May this year.

The project’s current focus is centered upon dewatering to expose the kimberlites, and placing concrete foundations and building steel superstructures for the major facilities.

Mountain Province is also working to make sure that the processing plant building is completed by October this year.

The mine is expected to produce an average of 4.5 million carats per year over a 12-year mine life.

Mountain Province own a 49% interest in the mine. De Beers Canada operates and holds a 51% stake.

Mountain Province Diamonds president and CEO Patrick Evans said: "We’re on track for first production in H2 2016 and are currently making arrangements to be in a position to receive and sell our 49 percent share of diamond production. These arrangements are expected to be in place by the end of 2015."

The Gahcho Kué project features a group of four diamondiferous kimberlites, of which three have a probable mineral reserve of 35.4 million tonnes grading 1.57 carats per tonne for total diamond content of 55.5 million carats.
