To be drilled to a total depth of 9,186ft, Kalala S-1 is the first of the company’s fully funded and uncapped three well drilling and evaluation programme in the Beetaloo Basin this year.
Rig 185, an ATS 400, has been commissioned from Saxon Energy Services for the drilling operations, which are expected to last for 35 to 50 days.
Falcon CEO Philip O’Quigley said: "The initial drilling programme is designed to test the hydrocarbon saturation and reservoir quality of the basin and determine the prospectivity of this highly attractive basin."
Kalala S-1 will be operated by Origin Resources with a 35% stake. Its partners are Sasol Petroleum Australia and Falcon, with 35% and 30%, respectively.
Falcon’s 2015 three-well drilling campaign forms part of a larger nine-well exploration and appraisal program, planned to take place from 2015 to 2018.
The first five well will be completed by 2016 with an estimated cost of A$64m to be borne by Origin and Sasol. Work on the sixth and the seventh wells will be undertaken in 2017, with A$53m to be spent by Falcon. The last two wells will be drilled in 2018, with A$48m to be invested by Origin adn Sasol.
The program aims to penetrate the Middle Velkerri formation to assess hydrocarbon saturation and reservoir quality, test oil versus gas maturity and determine the most prospective areas and depth window, and provide further information on the aerial distribution of the target Middle Velkerri formation.
