The mine is owned by Semirara Mining & Power, which is a unit of Philippine conglomerate DMCI Holdings.
The company acknowledge the accident and confirmed that there were nine workers at the site when the accident happened.
Antique provincial governor Rhodora Cadiao said that the incident might have been caused due to heavy rain at the mine site, located off the main island of Panay.
Cadiao added that the incident happened around 3AM when the miners were working on a water system.
The Department of Energy has suspended operations at the mine and a government panel will carry out an investigation into the incident.
Similar incident took place in the island in 2013 when a landslide in a coal mine killed five and five others were announced missing, reported Reuters.
The company said in a statement that it is coordinating with national and local authorities to keep them updated on other necessary measures.
