The Hidden Valley mine is located 300km northwest of Papua New Guinea’s capital, Port Moresby.
It employs about 1000 workers and 1600 contractors in the fly-in-fly-out operation, the Australian reported.
Newcrest said: "Newcrest is deeply saddened by this incident and we are working with the management of Hidden Valley to understand the circumstances.
"We express our condolences and support to the employee’s family, friends and colleagues at the Hidden Valley operation, during this difficult time."
The project produced 211,690 ounces of gold and 1,949,692 ounces of silver in the 2014.
