An IWP&DC reader replies to a request for information on utilising sewage water for pumped storage projects.

In response to the request for information on hydro projects using sewage water, the reader is referred to the Las Vacas hydro power plant in Guatemala, which is presently under construction and nearing completion.

This 20MW plant uses water from the Las Vacas river which is basically the collected untreated sewage from Guatemala City, 19km away. The project will operate as a peaking plant that coincides with the peak discharge of sewage.

Colenco Power Engineering of Switzerland provided the technical, environmental and economic appraisal for the project in 1999 for the Inter-American Investment Corporation which is providing part of the funding for the scheme. The developer and owner of the project is Fabrigas Sociedad Anonima de Guatemala.
