GE POWER SYSTEMS IN Norway is supplying Korea Western Power Company with turbines and additional equipment for the Cheong-Song pumped storage project, which includes two hydro power plants totalling 600MW.
Scheduled to enter commercial service by the end of 2006, the project is located 314km southwest of Seoul.
‘Cheong-Song is the first GE hydro power project in Korea, and is a strategically important contract for GE in Asia,’ said F L Leow, regional general manager, ge-hydro Sales – Asia Pacific for GE Power Systems. ‘It marks the first time international competitive bidding was used for a hydro power project in Korea, following the country’s entry into the World Trade Organisation.’
The scope of GE’s contract includes the supply and installation of two 300MW reversible pump turbines, motor/generators, governors and associated balance-of-plant equipment. The equipment will be supplied from GE Hydro manufacturing facilities in Norway, Canada and Brazil.
