
Located 32km north to the island of Rügen in the Baltic Sea, the facility features 80 Siemens-built SWT-3.6-120 wind turbines, and spread across an area of 27km2.
The facility, which is the company’s second offshore wind farm in the Baltic Sea, is designed to generate 1.2 billion kWh of electricity to meet power needs of around 340,000 households every year.
EnbW commissions its first offshore wind farm in the Baltic Sea, the 48.3MW Baltic 1 offshore wind farm, in 2010.
EnBW CEO Frank Mastiaux emphasised: "We want to expand renewable energies to make them one of the main pillars of our business.
"The commissioning of EnBW Baltic 2 is another milestone in the implementation of our EnBW 2020 strategy.
"We will build on this success in the next few years when we begin work on further offshore wind farm projects.
The commissioning marks a step ahead for EnBW in achieving its aim to double the share of power generated from renewable energy to over 40% in 2020.
German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy Parliamentary Secretary of State Uwe Beckmeyer said: "The Baltic 2 wind farm is four times as big and generates six times as much electricity as its predecessor. This demonstrates the opportunities offered by the industrialisation of offshore wind energy."
Mastiaux added: "And is further evidence that the remodeling of the energy supply system towards decentralization and renewable energies is irreversible, not only in Germany but also around the world."
EnBW currently has 1,600MW of projects in pipeline which also include three other offshore wind farms in the North Sea.
