The 3GW facility, which is planned to be set up at Science and Technology Advanced Manufacturing Park (STAMP), will have initial production capacity of 250MW which includes around 50 million standard silicon wafers per year.

1366 Technologies CEO Frank van Mierlo said: "From day one, we have taken a deliberate, highly-measured path to scaling.

"The facility in Bedford, Massachusetts was our proving ground. New York brings us to commercial scale.

"The technology is ready and 1366 is squarely positioned to lead in an industry undergoing rapid global growth."

Featuring 400 Direct Wafer furnaces, the 130,000ft2 facility is designed to produce over 600 million high-performance silicon wafers annually, required to power 360,000 households in the US.

The 366 Technologies’ Direct Wafer technology is a transformative manufacturing process capable of producing a uniformly better silicon solar wafer at half the cost.

Scheduled to be completed in 2017, the facility is expected to create over 1,000 new, full-time job opportunities.

The firm intends to start construction of the plant by the second quarter of 2016 with an initial investment of around $100m.

The proposed manufacturing plant is planned to be developed with a total investment of around $700m, reported SeeNews Renewables.

Frank van Mierlo said: "Our goal has always been two-fold: deliver solar at the cost of coal and manufacture – at scale – in the United States."
