The desalination capacity of Qatar will reach to a total of 324 million gallons per day in 2010, but water consumption is expected to reach 380 million gallons per day by 2013.
Saad al-Mohannadi, director of technical affairs at Kahramaa said that the engineering, procurement, construction documents and the technical specification for a reverse osmosis plant were being prepared.
Kahramaa also plans to tender the consultancy contract for a new power project in the first half of 2009. The consultant will study three sites, at Ras Laffan, Messaieed and Umm Bab that can accommodate a power plant, Facility D.
The plant construction will not proceed for several years as projects already in progress are expected to be sufficient to meet demand growth over the next five years.
The power consumption in Qatar is expected to increase to 7,791 megawatt (MW) by 2013, from the current pocer consumption of 3,990 MW. The company anticipates having 9,032MW of capacity installed by 2010.
The demand for desalinated water will exceed supply by 2011 to 2013 unless the new reverse osmosis facility is built.
Al-Mohanndi also said that the potential for using solar and wind energy in Qatar is being studied and the outcomes will be reported at the end of 2009.
