Each of MEC’s Ontario locations has been built with unique features that support sustainability and make the spaces eco friendly. The new Burlington store has been designed and constructed to a LEED gold standard and is in the process of becoming certified. The Toronto location is home to a 10,000-square-foot green roof that is a self-sustaining prairie environment. The Ottawa store, when relocated in 2000, was the first retail location in Canada to comply with the (now defunct) C2000 Green Building Certification.
“Procuring wind power for our Alberta and Ontario stores is a key element in our ongoing efforts to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions that stem from our retail operations,” said MEC senior manager of operations Gary Faryon. “MEC is delighted to partner with Bullfrog Power to harness clean electricity for our stores.”
This expansion of MEC’s green power purchase reinforces its leadership, despite uncertain economic times. “Mountain Equipment Co-op continues to show insightful leadership by implementing extensive sustainability initiatives and building practices in its retail locations,” said Tom Heintzman, president, Bullfrog. “The decision to purchase clean, renewable electricity for their Ontario locations further enhances their sustainability efforts and we are extremely pleased to continue our partnership with them.”
