The Xilin Gol League and Shangxi province project will supply 3 million kilowatt (kW) to Liaoning province and 4 million kW to Shandong province respectively.

The country is also stressing on developing new energy sources and building several super-coal companies through acquisition and mergers.

Over the next three years, China will shut down small thermal power generator networks with capacity less than 1.3 million kW and replace them with large, efficient and clean coal-burning units with a capacity of 50 million kW.

As per the government plan, China will launch construction of three nuclear power plants in 2009 with a combined capacity of 8.4 gigawatt, including the Sanmen nuclear power plant in Zhejiang province, the Haiyang nuclear power plant in Shandong province, and the Taishan nuclear power plant in Guangdong province.

The National Energy Administration under the National Development and Reform Commission (NRDC) said that the slump in domestic energy demand due to the global financial crisis has also brought to the opportunity to initiate reforms to the existing energy structure.
