All plastic containers must have been used for common consumer goods such as drinks, yogurt, margarine, icing, catsup, mustard, dish soap or laundry detergent.
To help identify if a plastic container is eligible for collection, residents should look for the identification number enclosed in the chasing-arrow recycling symbol on the bottom of the container.
“To create a sustainable recycling program, recycled goods must be processed and shipped to market at a cost that is economically viable,” said Michael Shaw, manager of the Solid Waste Division of the Public Works Department. “With the identification of a strong market for No. 3 through No. 7 plastics residents can increase recycling to divert trash from local landfills.”
